Biology Term 1

0.5 Credit course

KWL concept map or mind map
- work to make a mindmap of all you know about the following terms: Biotic & Prokaryote (you will revisit and revise this mindmap throughout this unit). Pictured is an example of a mind map. You goal is to identify main ideas and the items/ examples that support them.

Video overview of why we study prokaryotes and viruses
This video is a compilation of tv and news footage that shows pandemics throughout recorded history. As you watch the video think about the following (you will write a response after the video):
-How have the tools used by the scientists changed over time?
-How has the understanding of the diseases shown evolved over the decades?
-In what ways are microbes affecting humans and humans affecting microbes?
-What questions does this video raise in your mind?

What is a prokaryote:
working in table groups, you will conduct research to complete the prokaryote review worksheet. Once your research has been compiled, you will create a powerpoint or keynote and present it to 2 other table groups to share your understanding. You will email your project to me and complete a peer review for each presentation you view.

Follow this link for some good pointers about making presentations and make sure you scroll down to the

Examples of prokaryotes that affect humans:

Go to 6m of the student news, view the short story and answer these questions:
What is the bubonic plague?
What is the historical significance of the plague?
How many cases of plague typically occur in the U.S. each year?
How did the girl seen in today's story contract the disease?
How might doctors address the challenges of diagnosing and treating rare diseases?

Read ch 19-1 and complete a chapter outline. After your read, complete the following worksheets:

What type of bacterial reproduction is represented in the video?
What type of growth is shown by bacteria in ideal conditions (exponential or logistic)?

Bacterial research project:
working in groups of 4 or less, you will research a series of current bacterial diseases affecting humans (3 per person). After conducting your research, you will percent your findings to your team mates and work together to answer three questions. Your answers must be reached by group consensus after all of your diseases have been presented.

Bacteria test

19-2 virus.
complete the worksheet as you read the section.

Revise your Mindmap to show your new learning
view the video clip from "understanding viruses"

summarize what you learned, what was confirmed that you already knew and 1 question for further research.

Select a virus to research. Build a model of the virus and write a 3x5 card summarizing the viruses characteristics for display

project
YOU NEED TEACHER APPROVAL OF THE FILM BEFORE YOU BEGIN
-Select a film to view that has an infectious disease central to its plot (examples include: I am legend, the Crazies, Contagion, Outbreak, And the Band Played On)
-create a timeline of the video plot, a character study for the main character and a report on the disease being followed (it's origination, method of spread, symptoms, impact on the human body, impact on society, economic impact, etc). You will also identify 5 points of fiction in the movie and their corresponding facts from science. Check out the webpage: http://www.bt.cdc.gov/agent/smallpox/disease/movies.aspfor an example of what this looks like.

Read 19-3, complete the end of section questions 1-6

compare and contrast bacteria and virus - how are they the same and different?
